줄무늬 애벌레는 지치고 슬픈 마음을 안고 지난 날 노랑 애벌레와 자기가 뒹굴며 놀던 그 옛날의 풀밭으로 기어가 보았습니다.

그러나 그녀는 거기에 없었습니다.

그는 기진맥진하여 더 이상 갈 수가 없었습니다.

그는 몸을 움추린 채 잠이 들었습니다.

 

그가 잠에서 깨어나 보니 노란 나비가 고운 두 날개로 그에게 부채질을 해주고 있었습니다.

"혹시 이것이 꿈인가?" 하고 그는 어리둥절 했습니다.

그러나 그 꿈인가 했던 행동은 너무나 현실적이었습니다.

 

그녀는 더듬으며 그를 쓰다듬어 주었고 사랑에 넘치는 눈길로 그를 바라보는 데서 나비가 될 수 있다는 자신의 말에 신념이 생겼습니다.

그녀는 조금 떨어진 곳까지 갔다가는 날아서 다시 돌아 갔습니다.

그에게 따라오라는 듯이 몇번이고 되풀이 했습니다.

 

그래서 그는 따라갔습니다. 그들은 어느 나무가지에 이르렀습니다.

그 가지에는 찢어진 두개의 고치가 매달려 있었습니다.

그 노란 나비는 그녀 자신의 머리를, 그 다음에는 꼬리를, 자꾸 그 중 한 고치에 들이 밀었습니다.

그리고는 그에게도 날아와서 그를 어루만져 주었습니다.

그녀의 더듬이는 가늘게 떨리고 있었고 줄무늬 애벌레는 그녀가 무엇인가 말을 하고 있음을 알았습니다.

그러나 그는 그 말을 알아들을 수가 없었습니다.

그러나 차츰 차츰 그는 이해할 것 같기도 했습니다. 마침내 무엇을 해야 할 것인가를 짐작케 되었습니다.

줄무늬 애벌래는 또 다시 기어 올라 갔습니다.

날은 점점 어둡고 캄캄해지기 시작했고 그는 차츰 무서워 졌습니다.

그는 모든 것을 포기해야 된다고 생각 했습니다. 모든 것을... 그러는 동안 노란 나비는 기다리고 있었습니다.

 

그러던 어느날…. 끝… 아닌 새로운 이야기의 시작인 것 입니다.
