그는 방향을 바꾸어서 기둥아래로 기어 내려가기 시작했습니다. 이제 부터는 몸을 웅크리지도 않고, 몸을 쭉 피고, 모든 애벌레들의 눈을 똑바로 바라 보았습니다. 그는 눈들이 각각 모두 다르면서도 그토록 아름다운 것에 놀랐고, 지난 날 그것을 알아보지 못한 자신에 대해서 또한 놀랐습니다. 그는 만나는 애벌레에게 마다 말해 주었습니다. "내가 꼭대기에 가 보았는데, 그곳에는 아무것도 없었어..." 그러나 아무도 그의 말을 믿어 듣지 않았습니다. 그들도 올라가는 일에만 정신을 쏟았습니다. 한 애벌레가 말했습니다. "공연히 거짓말 마... 꼭대기까지 슬라가 보지도 못하고... 샘이 나서 그러지...?" 그러나 몇마리의 애벌레 누 그의 말에 추격을 받았고 좀 더 자세히 들으려고 올라가던 길을 멈추기도 하였습니다. 그들 중 한 마리가 걱정스러운 말투로 물었습니다. "그것이 정말이라도 그런 말은 하지마... 우리는 별다른 도리가 없잖아...?" 줄무늬 애벌레는 다음과 같이 말해 모든 애벌레들을 깜짝 놀라게 했습니다. 그리고 자기 자신도 놀랐습니다. "우리는 날 수가 있단말야! 우리는 나비가 될 수 있단 말야! 꼭대기에는 아무 것도 없어! 그러니까 거기에 신경 쓸 필요가 없어!" 자기 자신의 말 속에서 그는 깨달았습니다. 지난 날 그가 높이 올라가려는 본능을 엉뚱하게 잘못 생각 했다는 사실을... 꼭대기에 올라가기 위해서는 기어 올라가는 것이 아니라 날아서 올라가야 한다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 줄무늬 애벌레는 자기 몸속에 나비가 들어 있을 것이라는 기쁨에 취해서 다른 모든 애벌레들을 바라 보았습니다. 그러나 그들의 반응은 예전보다 더 좋지 않았습니다. 그들의 눈동자에는 두려움이 가득 차있었습니다. 그들은 가던 걸음을 멈추고서, 들으려고도, 대꾸를 하려고도 하지 않았습니다. 이 즐겁고 영광스러운 새 사실은 벅찬 가슴을 감당하기 어려웠고 사실로 믿기엔 스스로 의문을 가졌습니다. "만일 사실이 아니라면?" 그 기둥에 비쳐 왔던 희망의 빛은 사라져 갔고, 모든 것은 뒤죽박죽 혼란 스럽고 비현실적인 것 같았습니다. 내려가는 길은 너무 먼 것만 같았습니다. 나비에 대한 꿈도 점점 사라져 갔습니다. 줄무늬 애벌레는 덜컥 의심이 몰아닥쳐 왔습니다. 그 기둥이 무섭도록 커다랗게 느꼈습니다. 그는 신념을 잃은 채 꿈틀거리며 나아갔습니다. 맹목적으로... 나비가 된다는 신념을 버리는 것은 옳지 않다고 생각했지만, 믿을 수만도 없는 것 같았습니다. 한 애벌레가 빈정거렸습니다. "그런 일을 어떻게 믿을 수가 있니? 땅에 있으면서 기어오르는 것이 우리들의 기능이야... 우리들의 모습을 남만 들여다 보아라... 우리들의 몸 속에 나비가 들어 있을 것 같은지... 최선을 다해서 애벌레들의 재주나 다 해보는 거야..." "어쩌면 그들의 말이 옳은지도 몰라... 내 말이 어떤 근거가 있는 것도 아니니까... 그렇다면 내가 필요해서 만들어 낸 말인가?" 하고 줄무늬 애벌레는 한 숨을 내쉬었습니다. 그는 아픈 마음으로 자기의 말을 들어 줄만한 친구들을 찾으면서 쉬지 않고 내려왔습니다. "나는 나비를 보았어... 삶에는 보다 충만한 것이 있을거야...." 어느 날 그는 마침내 기둥 밑까지 내려왔습니다.
